It’s that time of year again. The kids get up early, breakfast is thrown together before the bus comes and parents are still reeling from the mad dash to the store for endless amounts of school supplies and new uniforms. School is here again. At Anderson Elementary School, there was a bustle of young children meeting wide-eyed teachers for the first time and getting settled in to the school rules. Children chatted about their tales of family vacations and summer conquests. For parents, the first day was a bit different. Stressful days of making sure the kids were ready gave way to moments of emotion and nostalgia as they watched their children start a new grade. Cameras flashed and sighs escaped as the day finally came. Some parents thought of the moments of quiet that the school year would bring, others wondered how much homework they would have to do with their children. When asked what advice should be passed on to parents, veteran DODEA second grade teacher Kendra Atkinson stated with a laugh. “Don’t buy the children such big book bags!” she said, “These poor kids are lugging around these large bags they can barely carry.”
